Fire Emblem GBA Portrait Pixel Art: 128×112 Template Guide

A rights-aware production workflow for original GBA-style portrait packages, including canvas regions, palette limits, mouth and blink frames, mini portraits, and dialogue testing.

A standard GBA portrait package uses a 128×112 canvas with a 96×80 main portrait region and reserved areas for talking frames, blinking frames, and a mini portrait. The exact import layout should still be checked in the target editor, but those measurements provide a reliable production template.

The style is studied from FE6, FE7, and FE8: three-quarter faces, compact color ramps, clustered shading, readable hair and clothing silhouettes, and controlled outlines. Study does not make official portraits or another artist’s splice free to reuse.

Nintendo/Intelligent Systems portraits are reference material. A rip, recolor, trace, or splice retains source rights and must not be advertised as an unrestricted original. Community portraits have creator-specific terms; a repository listing is not blanket permission.

For genuinely original work, observe general visual grammar, then draw a new face, hair silhouette, costume, and details. If you use permitted donor pieces, record every donor and editor and follow each source’s use/edit rules.

Set Up the 128×112 Canvas

Create an indexed 128×112 image with guides marking the 96×80 main portrait rectangle and the tool-specific locations for mouth, blink, and mini frames. Reserve the required background/transparent color from the beginning. Do not crop the canvas to visible art; the importer expects the package layout.

Keep a clean template layer showing region boundaries but export only the indexed artwork. Name files with character, version, palette revision, and rights status so a test export cannot be confused with a release asset.

Build the Main 96×80 Portrait

Begin with silhouette and face placement before detail. Check head scale, shoulder mass, eye line, nose and mouth spacing, hair volume, and how the bust fits the dialogue box. The three-quarter pose needs a clear near side and far side; mirroring facial features mechanically can flatten the head.

Use clustered pixels to describe planes. Isolated noise and excessive one-pixel anti-aliasing can make the image shimmer or disappear on a small display. Zoom out frequently and preview at actual size against light and dark dialogue backgrounds.

Keep the Full Package to 16 Colors

The reviewed portrait technique specifies 16 colors total, including required outline and background colors. Plan compact ramps for skin, hair, clothing, metal or accents, outline, and background. Reuse colors where forms remain readable rather than adding a near-duplicate for one pixel.

Indexed palette discipline matters more than the apparent count in a modern editor. Hidden alpha, duplicate RGB values in different indices, or export conversion can overflow or reorder the palette. Inspect the index table after every major export.

Talking Frames

Talking frames should animate the same mouth rather than replace it with a differently positioned feature. Build closed, mid, and open shapes that share corners, jaw direction, and local shading. Avoid moving the nose, chin, or surrounding skin between frames.

Preview the cycle at dialogue speed. An open mouth that looks plausible when enlarged can flash as a bright block at actual size. Test long lines, punctuation pauses, and both light and dark text boxes if the project changes interface palettes.

Blinking Frames

Construct half-closed and closed eyes from the main portrait’s sockets and brow direction. Keep the face, hair, and surrounding pixels fixed. A blink that shifts one eye horizontally reads as a head wobble even if each frame looks correct alone.

Check asymmetrical hair, glasses, scars, or eyelids separately. The far eye may need fewer pixels, but both eyes should share the same timing logic. Validate the resting frame after the blink ends.

Mini Portrait

The mini portrait is not just a scaled-down crop. Redraw the head and strongest identifiers for the smaller slot: hair silhouette, face direction, one costume accent, and outline separation. Automated scaling produces mixed colors and noisy edges that violate the palette and reduce readability.

Test the mini wherever the project uses it, including menus or support screens. Confirm that its background index and palette match the full package.

Import and Dialogue Validation

Back up the destination portrait slot and import a copy through the target editor. Inspect any automatic palette mapping, then build a short dialogue scene that exercises idle, talking, blinking, name box, position changes, and both screen sides.

Validate:

  • 128×112 canvas and expected region placement;
  • 96×80 main portrait bounds;
  • sixteen total indexed colors including outline/background;
  • transparent/background index and absence of stray colors;
  • mouth alignment through every talking frame;
  • eye alignment through half and full blinks;
  • mini-portrait clarity and palette;
  • no clipping against dialogue windows.

Common Failure Patterns

Palette overflow often comes from soft brushes or export conversion. Misplaced mouth frames usually trace to a template offset or crop. A face that reads at 800% but not at 100% needs stronger clusters and value separation, not more micro-detail. A noisy mini portrait needs redrawing, not another shrink filter.

When spliced pieces clash, compare outline hue, light direction, skin ramp, pixel density, and perspective. Permission to edit remains a separate question from whether the edit looks coherent.

Licensing and Credit Checklist

  • Classify every source as official reference, original work, or permitted community derivative.
  • Never claim a rip, trace, recolor, or splice as wholly original.
  • Save each artist’s source URL, usage/edit status, checked date, and credit text.
  • Obtain permission where no explicit terms exist.
  • Credit donor artists and the portrait editor separately when appropriate.
  • Verify whether redistribution of an edited standalone portrait is allowed.
  • Recheck terms before publishing the project.
